Bacurau (2019)

Bacurau is a bold and genre-bending Brazilian film directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, set in a remote village in the Northeast that mysteriously disappears from maps after the death of its matriarch. When armed outsiders begin to attack the community, the villagers unite in an unexpected and violent resistance.

Mixing elements of western, sci-fi, and political thriller, the film explores themes of colonialism, exploitation, regional identity, and collective struggle. Its inventive style, dark humor, and social critique made it one of the most distinctive and provocative Brazilian films of recent years.

Winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Bacurau gained international acclaim for its originality and its unapologetic portrayal of resilience against oppression.
